Calendar of Events
Note: Meetings are usually held on the second Sunday of each month, September through May, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Currently we are meeting via Zoom, but in-person meetings are held at the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Services Center, 4805 Edgemoor Lane, Bethesda, Maryland, and occasionally at other venues. The meetings are open to anyone. However, certain meetings may require a fee.
The New Face of Israeli Cuisine

TALK DESCRIPTION
During this interactive presentation Roger will show more than a dozen scenes that were not included in his acclaimed documentary, In Search of Israeli Cuisine, a portrait of the Israeli people told through food, conflict, and all.
Scenes will illustrate how Israel went from being one of the poorest countries to having the hottest food scene in the world. A culinary travelogue, participants will meet chefs and home cooks, visit markets, and discover traditions and cultures: Moroccan, Lebanese, Libyan, Turkish, Yemenite, Palestinian, Arab, Ashkenazi, and many more.
In Search of Israeli Cuisine was shown on Netflix, in theaters across the U.S. and Canada, and in more than 160 film festivals and special screenings around the world. A Boston Globe reviewer wrote, “I was surprised to find myself choked up before the opening credits.”
Roger’s films have won two Academy Award nominations, an Emmy Award, a Peabody Award, and a James Beard Award. Of his many films, The Restaurateur, a portrait of renowned restaurant owner Danny Meyer won the 2013 James Beard Award for Best Documentary, Broadcast Journalism.
SPEAKER BIO
Roger M. Sherman is a cinematographer, director, producer, still photographer, and author best known for his work in documentary cinema. His college roommate was Ken Burns (of PBS American history fame), and in 1976, a year after graduating from Hampshire College, Roger, Ken, and another college friend founded Florentine Films.
They started by working as a New England crew for companies filming in the region. At the time when magazine shows were beginning to launch, the team worked for RAI/Italian television, the BBC, Danish television, and French television.
